Maximising Employee Performance
Are your employees as productive and focused as you need them to be? Would you like to work with them to improve their performance? There is no easy way to do this, it takes time, effort and patience, however you will reap the rewards if you consistently follow these 3 steps:
Firstly, ensure your employees have up to date Position Descriptions incorporating specific, measurable, achievable Key Performance Indicators. They need to be very clear about what they should be doing.
Secondly, take the time to prepare and conduct 6 monthly Performance Reviews, to make sure they know how much you value them, tell them what they are fabulous at and areas they could focus a little more on. It’s also a great time to review their position description and KPI’s.
Thirdly, and most importantly, is maintain the communication between each Performance Review, and this means more than “Hi, how are you? How was your weekend?” It means, being aware of how they are tracking, what is bothering them this week, what are their challenges, what is working well?
The GROW Model provides a brilliant, easy to remember approach to help guide these discussions, whether the discussion be about improving performance, problem solving or addressing below standard performance. It can be used in all areas of life!
So what is GROW? GROW stands for:
|Goal||What would you like the employee to achieve? What would they like to achieve? What is the problem?|
|Current Reality||What is happening now? What, who, when, how often?|
|Options to Change||Explore options for achieving the goal or solving the problem. Encourage the employee to be creative when exploring options.|
|Will||Encourage the employee to choose the best option and be willing to do it! If they choose the option, there is greater chance of them “owning” it and doing it!|
